The Mustard Seed is Emmanuel‘s community mission where our vision is to be Jesus with skin on in our community. Our work at times is small, but our mission is that what we plant may grow an intimate relationship with Christ in someone else.
When did the Mustard Seed start?
In July 2011, a small group from Emmanuel took a trip to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Buderim for their mission weekend. Members were inspired by the mission work of Immanuel and could see opportunities for our congregation to participate in similar mission areas.
Whom do we support?
We currently support Eva’s Place, the Salvation Army Crisis Centre and Harristown State School Chaplain (our neighbour just up the road from the chapel where we worship). We also support our homeless community and families fleeing domestic violence or who are needing refuge.
What do we do?
We find practical ways of support. Among other initiatives, we run stationery drives and collate Christmas hampers for the Harristown State School Chaplain to distribute to families in need. We run a blanket and non-perishable food drive for the Salvation Army Crisis Centre in winter. We also collect and donate FAB packs containing toiletries and personal care items to OZ Care and The Basement to distribute to women and men fleeing domestic violence, for families needing refuge and for homeless men and women.
Eva’s Place and the Harristown State School Chaplain all continually require more funding for various reasons. Although we love to offer practical assistance, we also run fundraising activities so we can contribute much-needed funds to these organisations. We held High Tea Fundraisers from 2014 to 2016 and a Trivia Night FUNdraiser in 2017.
